Creating VMFS Datastore fails with “Failed to update disk partitions for /vmfs/devices/disks/”

Posted on November 10, 2023

I was trying to create a VMFS datastore and got the following error. This post shows the steps to trobleshoot the errror “Failed to update disk partitions for /vmfs/devices/disks/”.

Select Storage >> Devices then select the problematic LUN

I’ve noticed there is some existing partition which I don’t want.

From the action menu, Select clear partition table to get rid of the unknown partition.

Click Yes to confirm clearing the partition table

Now the Partition table is gone. Click create New datastore to create a new volume.

Define the name of Datastore and Click Next.

Select Partitioning option and Click Next

Click Finish.

Click Yes.

Now, the Datastore was able to create successfully.

I hope this was helpful. You can view my previous VMware posts here
